"The world was hers for the reading!"

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (borrowed from a student)How have I not read this book?? The entire time I was reading it I was so immersed in Francie Nolan's life that it seemed like knew her, had met her even and, therefore, had read this at some point. But then as I found myself mulling over certain phrases, re-reading them, saying them out loud, I knew that this was not a book to forget. I love a memoir (even though this is technically fiction, it is most likely a memoir) and the description, character development and word choice is just flippin awesome. There were numerous times where I literally tried to memorize quotes because they were so well written. One of my personal favorites that I have stored away to adorn the wall of my future personal library is the post title. What a great way to look at the world! I am sure that most people have read this but if you haven't you need to read it now!

The Historian (an oldie but a goodie)
I don't remember why I first read this book but it is SO good that I find myself re-reading it about once a year. It is an amazingly detailed story about Dracula that is set in Central & Eastern Europe. That is maybe the most awful description of a book I've ever seen, but I promise it is good! Warning: You are left hanging at the end of every chapter. It is one of the hardest books I've ever read to actually put down.

Half Broke Horses (borrowed from Toni)
If you have not read "The Glass Castle" then stop right now and go read it. Then, read this little number. This one is about the author's grandmother who was freaking a total badass. I love the stories & the characters. I didn't read the kindle edition but couldn't find another picture.

This was one of the impulse buys from the clearance bin at Borders & I love it! Each entry is one of his past columns & they all focus on a really cool story that makes you mad or kind of choked up. A different approach to sport stories, for sure.
** Do you italicize or quotation mark book titles? Nicole/Jeannie, this question is directed at you**

  1. I love book recommendations- especially when I am home for the next 6 weeks on maternity leave!

I always italicize book titles. Quotes are more for poem titles, in my opinion/memory of grammar.

And I think your word choice is flippin awesome as well.

  2. Don't get mad. I still haven't read The Historian, but I will as soon as we move. I packed it for WS.

Also, like Jeans said...you underline or italicize (there are 2 options, because you can't italicize when you are handwriting) things that are long, like book titles, movie titles, TV shows. You put quotes around shorter things- poems, songs, chapter titles, TV episode titles, short stories.

I am sure you were really that curious.

  3. Have read The Historian, LOVED IT! I love old history and anything to do with vampires. (yes, I'm one of those over 30 who loves that junk!) It was well written and very believable in the detail. Wonder if there's anymore from that author? Will have to check on that! Love to all, kisses to lil A!
