Dr Cogen: Hello, Melissa, it's Dr. Cogen.
Me: Oh, hi. How are you? (in a totally flustered, I am talking to a celebrity on the phone, way)
Dr. Cogen: Checking in...Eye Foundation is making a video to promote funding for vision grants...need a pediatric perspective...you are the first person I thought of...Anderson's story...would you be interested?
Me: Absolutely.
Dr. Cogen: I am not sure what it includes, you might have to travel and I don't know when the time would even be...
Me: Absolutely.
Dr. Cogen: I know you are busy and pregnant...don't have time...
Me: Absolutely.
Anderson's Eye has been
Turns out, nobody needed my arm and since I am giant pregnant, they agreed to meet us in Chattanooga instead of us driving to Bham.
It was a bit more official than I expected.
I took the whole process very seriously. I only teared up once.
Anderson even got to help! They wanted him to answer some questions and he, of course, decided not to fully cooperate. The kid who the night before was explaining to us what nocturnal means, refused to even say his name and age in a normal voice. We tried him sitting on my lap and talking, but there is just not a lot of room for the 3 of us on my lap at this point. So, they asked him some questions sitting in the chair by himself and he was pretty cute. She is supposed to send me the final video, so we will see how he did.
| This was worn during the interview, of course. Representing the imoms! |
I am aware that maybe 7 people are going to see this video, but I am so grateful to be a part of the Eye world and feel like in some teeny, tiny way we are paying back the enormous debt we owe to research and Dr. Cogen. It was fun!
We always take Noni with us when we leave the house. Seriously, she entertained him the entire time so I could answer questions and is a pretty fun travel partner, too!
Since we were in Chattanooga & I had taken the whole day off work, we decided to hit up the aquarium. It was SO much fun; I've never been!
Staring contest with a butterfly.
We were there during penguin feeding time!! Anderson saw all of the penguins on the ice/land part & said, "They must be a class getting ready for swimming lessons." As for me, I really liked watching the penguins; I think they were my favorite part.
He insisted on wearing his fire hat. You just never know.
Seriously. Sharks. He told us this was his favorite part and has since been obsessed with playing "Under the Sea" at GG's house. There were about 4 or 5 in the tank and they were definitely giant and scary looking, but very cool.
We stalked the sting rays...
and finally lured one over!
It was such a random and fun day! I am so glad I had the chance to hang out with this boy and my mom before there is another kid in the mix. I think the fact that the whole thing was sort of last minute and unexpected made it even better.

What a fun day! I definitely want to see the video. I hear your voice in your little uploaded videos and I can imagine what you sounded like answering questions. And the aquarium! How cool. The firehat made the outfit.
ReplyDeleteThose are most definitely the best kind of days. Absolutely. :)
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to see this video of Anderson and love that you were the first person Dr Cogen thought of when it came to stories that would convince people that what he does for a living seriously works. Proof that Anderson is a perfect :)
ReplyDeleteFirst, I would like to mention what everyone else is thinking but doesn't want to admit: we are all a little jealous of the imoms. And when you nonchalantly use jargon like PO, some of us feel left out. Primary Opthamalogist? Not cool.
ReplyDeleteSecond, why didn't you tell me that comment about the penguins and the swim class? Love him. So insightful.
Third, soon there will be a Max blog post. Holy cow.
You should be jealous of the imoms. We are a special bunch of patchers.
ReplyDeletePediatric ophthalmologist .... You should know this, bobble cole

ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity for you to give back to the doctor and organization that helped you guys on this journey! As a new imom just starting out your story is very informational and it lets me know there's a light at the end of the eye patch battle! And as an imom who also happens to be a television producer, I know your story is going to make a difference because it's personal and comes from the heart. Doctors and experts can talk all they want, but people like me watching want to see how someone in the throws of it all made it work. I can't wait to see the video! Congrats! And what a fun day too!
ReplyDelete(Sorry...I had to delete my first comment. I had a type and it was driving me nuts! Crazy I know...it's 11pm my time and it's been a long day....working moms..you get it ;)
THAT IS SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! You, of course, would've been GREAT for that video. So personable and honest! That is so so so so cool!!!!! I hope you post the video on here!
ReplyDeleteAnd I laughed, because I pick up the phone and answer it like that too when it's a telemarketer or something.
What can I say!! Every time we have an Infant See Event at SCO I can't help thinking about Anderson and hoping another baby with an eye problem will be discovered so he/she can be helped before it is too late.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I teared up when I read the reasoning behind your no hesitation response... ABSOLUTELY. How amazingly grateful am I/we that our children were born in a time when the technology exists to actually detect and treat these rare and severe eye conditions. And yes, someone somewhere donated money to make it possible. A chance to pay it forward... ABSOLUTELY. Amen to that! You are imom-ing for future imoms, I think that promotes you to pro-imom status! haha. I also extra love that you wore the patching star pin!!! Yay.
ReplyDeleteWhen Cheslaa told me you were doing this I laughed out loud thinking of you trying to contain Anderson for an interview!!! All I could invision was him being a car and racing around and how many retakes they would have to do to get you to talk slow enough!!! You are the perfect candidate for this project and you represent infant vision in an amazing way with the best kid ever!! I can't wait to see the finished product! You go Girl!
ReplyDeleteWow - that is awesome, Melissa. I am so glad he thought of you, as I am sure you did an amazing job!! I totally did not know what a PO was either, thanks, Nicole. Can't wait for the video!
ReplyDeleteCAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE VIDEO!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved how your hair started out down, and all cute. Then it was up in a ponytail. Hilarious. I got my hair cut recently, posted the pic on FB to show everyone how cute it was, and one friend's response was "now will you please quit wearing it in a ponytail?!" Sigh.
