"I cannot live without books!"

Technically, Thomas Jefferson said that quote but I have totally stolen it and made it my own by adding the exclamation point. (TJ was pretty reserved and soft spoken. I don't think he used exclamation points. I can let you know more once I actually finish "American Sphinx". But, I digress.) I LOVE, LOVE a book. LOVE. I have decided that my 2011 Resolution is to read more. It is really the only thing that makes me non-spaz. I am not a good TV watcher because I am constantly trying to jump up and fold the clothes, load the the dishwasher, etc. Brandon is a trooper to put up with me. It took us 5 months to actually watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Anyways, I literally cannot put down a book if it is real. I will find myself sneaking away from things to read just a few more pages. The sleep situation would be massively improved if I would just PUT THE BOOK DOWN! I fully recognize this fact, but I just cannot handle myself. I am addicted to books. To remind myself just how much reading is my favorite, I have narrowed down my 2010 memory to the top 5 books. Please don't feel that you need to read, I am doing this for purely selfish reasons. I want to re-live the amazingness even if it is only in a few sentences.

1. Room I probably make some random mind reference to this book on a daily basis. It's the story of a woman who was kidnapped 7 years ago & forced to live in a shed with her 5 year old son, Jack. It totally impacted me because as much as I can't imagine myself surviving there I look at Anderson and realize I would because I would have no other option. Excuse the run on sentence. Anyway, I highly recommend it.

2. Hunger Games Technically, this is a triolgy but I am grouping it together. It's my list, I make the rules. Honestly, it's addiction in the purest sense of the word. Harry Potter it's not, but it's about the closest second that I've read. Thank goodness Nicole teaches reading & keeps my reading stack full of captivating worlds. I am embarassed to admit that I found myself sneaking away from Lily's 1st birthday party to read just a few more pages. Seriously, I pretended that I had to check on Anderson. It sounds so awful in writing.

3. The Help I love this because it a fictional account of maids in the South during the 1960's so it mixes real history with a fun story and wonderfully developed characters. PLEASE read it before the movie comes out!!

4. A Thousand Splendid Suns Another one that totally impacts me now that I am a mom. Sounds cheesy, but it's true. Mariam and Laila would have been so happy with just 5% of what my life is and yet I find something to complain about pretty much every few minutes. Again, I like that it mixes hsitory with a fictional story. My stomach hurt a lot during this book.

5. Game Change I love some good, juciy gossip and that really is what this book is about with regard to the 2008 presidential candidates. It's the book that exposed the whole "John Edwards is scum" thing. The character descriptions are really in depth and actually led me to read Hillary Clinton's autobiography. Also, it was really interesting to see how the campaigns work behind the scenes.

So, those are my top 5 of 2010. If anyone has any fun suggestions for my 2011 resolution list, please share!

  1. Your quote from TJ is probably the only thing me and the old guy agree on. :) I'm downloading Game Changers to my Kindle next. You've got me intrigued...

  2. I can remember when you were little and always wanting five more minutes to finish a chapter before you had to go to bed. :)

  3. this is something you and have seriously have in common. My poor family. . they know that if mommy is really into a book (which is pretty much ANY book) they are on their own. TOTALLY on their own. When I was engrossed in the Outlander series (7 big books) it was amazing that they didn't starve to death, or burn down the house from lack of supervision, or that I didn't die of sleep deprivation. If I ever win the lottery I am buying my own Barnes and Noble and only me and the people I love can come in. But only those other people if they can sit quietly and read :)

  4. "I probably make some random mind reference to this book on a daily basis." So true. The fact that Lily now loves Dora doesn't help my shake it off any faster, either.

  7. Suns is SUCH a good book! It stays with you! I am downloading Room! That sounds really crazy! In your picture of books I see The Book Thief, I truly loved that book. The main character is so amazing and the story is good but sad. The Help is a must! Hunger Games...I talked about it so much yesterday I got two people to buy it! Suzanne Collins should be paying us I swear!
